Portugal Liga Preview: Week 14 (Dec 17-20)

Friday December 17 2010,
In the final action in Portugal before the Christmas break, Benfica and Sporting face tricky encounters while FC Porto strive to end the first half of the season still unbeaten.
The last round of matches before the winter break in Portugal includes some fascinating duels. Benfica take on Rio Ave – a side on a hot run of form – at the Estadio da Luz, while runaway leaders FC Porto have a trip to a venue that is always problematic for the big teams, the Mata Real, home of Paços de Ferreira.

Sporting will be gunning for revenge as they travel to the Bonfim to play Vitoria Setubal for the second successive weekend. The Sadinos knocked the Lions out of the Portuguese Cup last Sunday, and Paulo Sergio knows a similar result on Monday, and a consequent third successive defeat, will inevitably lead to calls for his head.

Elsewhere Braga will try to get their season back on track at home to Academica, while Guimaraes and Leiria will fight to stay at the top of the table with away trips to Beira-Mar and Naval respectively.

Monday November 29 2010,
FC Porto and Sporting played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Alvalade, giving Benfica the opportunity to cut Porto’s lead at the top of the table to a ‘mere’ eight points.

Portugal Liga Preview: Week 12 (Nov 26-28)

Thursday November 25 2010,
Round 12 in Portugal is dominated by a classic of Portuguese football as Sporting host FC Porto, a match which in turn is dominated by the return to the Alvalade of former Sporting captain Joao Moutinho.
Moutinho left the Lisbon club in acrimonious circumstances in the summer to join northern rivals FC Porto, leading the Sporting president Jose Eduardo Bettencourt to infamously label him “a rotten apple”.

The diminutive midfielder has not let the slur affect him. His brilliant form for club and country makes Moutinho one of the players of the season so far in Portugal.

Elsewhere, Benfica will be under close scrutiny as they travel to Beira-Mar on the back of an embarrassing Champions League exit in Israel, while second-placed Vitoria Guimaraes face a tough assignment away at improving Maritimo.

Portugal vs Spain Report

Thursday November 18 2010,
Portugal produced a stunning performance in Lisbon to humble the reigning World Champions Spain.
Even accounting for Portugal’s recent improvement under new coach Paulo Bento, nobody saw this one coming. A magnificent display from the Portuguese from start to finish ended in a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Spain.

There was little brotherly love between the Iberian neighbours in the early stages, as Busquets clattered into Ronaldo, with the Real Madrid star quick to seek retribution with an equally crude challenge. Both players received yellow cards.

Nani and Iniesta went close in the opening exchanges in what looked set for an even contest. The unmarked David Silva should have put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark when he headed wide from an excellent Capdevila cross.

Proven: Cristiano Ronaldo's Goal Vs Spain Was Legitimate!

Thursday November 18 2010,
Tags: Cristiano Ronaldo, Spain, Portugal, Nani, Friendly
Cristiano Ronaldo's disallowed goal for Portugal against Spain was in fact legitimate and thus should have stood. Pictures speak for themselves and facts can be proven.

Cristiano Ronaldo is angry as referee Antony Gautier disallows his clean goal for "offside". Portugal still defeated Spain 4-0 in the end.Nani doesn't need to apologize to his Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo for last night's "spoiled goal" during the Spain friendly. The cause behind all that is something that keeps occurring in football matches: it was all about wrong officiating, or "human error" one might prefer to say.

Facts don't lie and modern technology, thankfully, can help the eye. Anti-Cristiano Ronaldo fans will be quick to criticize the Portuguese skipper once again. This time, for his “spectacular” tantrum that followed referee Antony Gautier's decision to disallow what would have been a magnificent goal. However, besides all other judgments against or in favor of Cristiano Ronaldo’s angry behavior, the truth remains the same:

Portugal vs Spain Preview

Wednesday November 17 2010,

Throughout the Iberian Peninsula and beyond millions of eyes will be focused on Lisbon on Wednesday night as World Champions Spain play Portugal
With Portugal seeking revenge against the team that ended their aspirations in South Africa and World Champions Spain attempting to extend an impressive record of just three defeats in their last 59 matches, the clash of the Iberian neighbours raises more interest than your average international friendly match.

Although the fixture was ostensibly organised to help promote the joint bid of the two countries to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup, two sets of fiercely proud and highly successful players should ensure a high level of competitiveness.

Both teams are at practically full strength, and with the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, David Villa, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani on the pitch, it is difficult to imagine anything other than a high-quality encounter.

Portugal vs Spain Friendly: Cristiano Ronaldo And Paulo Bento’s Real Test

Portugal vs Spain will see Cristiano Ronaldo and Coach Paulo Bento put to the test. This international friendly match is meant to reveal a lot concerning Portugal’s current status.

Portugal's Coach Paulo Bento and Captain Cristiano Ronaldo have some points to prove against Spain. The sack of Carlos Queiroz – which was preceded by Portugal’s unimpressive showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup – put an end to the national team’s frustrating run which begun to build itself after the departure of the retired Luis Figo. In the early moments of this embarrassing period for the former European Championship runners-up, Captain Cristiano Ronaldo was key to Portugal’s acceptable results as ex-boss Luiz Felipe Scolari managed to compensate Figo’s loss through different tactics.

The Selecção weren’t displaying the best football that any fan could dream of, but they did just enough to reach Euro 2008 with Cristiano Ronaldo emerging as the team’s top scorer in the qualifiers. But just as the star winger was expected to power Portugal to more success ahead of the competition in Switzerland and Austria, his fitness suffered a setback.

Portugal Liga Report: Week 11 (Nov 12-14)

Monday November 15 2010,
It’s as you were at the top of the Liga ZON Sagres as the top three FC Porto, Vitoria Guimaraes and Benfica all won at the weekend.
Benfica bounced back from their thrashing at Porto last week to add more misery on basement dwellers Naval, with a 4-0 victory at the Estadio da Luz. In the big Minho derby, an own goal near the end of the game by Miguel Garcia handed Vitoria Guimaraes all three points against fierce rivals Braga.

Despite a jaded performance, Porto were too strong for Portimonense. A goal in each half from Brazilian forwards Walter and Hulk gave the Dragons another victory to maintain their ten-point lead at the top of the table.

Sporting picked up a morale-boosting win at Academica, while Rio Ave continued their recuperation with a 3-1 win at home to Paços de Ferreira.

Friday November 12 2010,
Two regional derbies catch the eye in Portugal this weekend, as fierce Minho rivals Guimaraes host Braga while in Madeira Nacional and Maritimo lock horns.
FC Porto and Benfica have seemingly straight-forward assignments as they play at home against struggling Naval and Portimonense respectively.

Sporting have a far tougher task as they travel to Coimbra to take on Jorge Costa’s Academica. The two teams are tied in the standings in joint fifth place and will be keen not to lose ground on the pack chasing Porto.

The most passionate match of the weekend, however, will be the local derby between Vitoria Guimaraes and Sporting Braga. There are usually fireworks when these two meet and there is no reason to believe Saturday night’s clash will be any different.

Portugal Liga Report: Week 10 (Nov 5-8)

Tuesday November 9 2010,
A breathtaking weekend of action in Portugal saw 30 goals scored in eight matches. While Porto’s thrashing of Benfica stole most of the headlines, thrilling matches at Braga, Setubal and Sporting made it a round to remember.
Porto’s humiliation of Benfica makes the Dragons huge favourites to lift the Liga ZON Sagres in May. The 5-0 victory puts Porto 10 points clear at the top of the table.

Into second place pop Vitoria Guimaraes, after a sensational comeback at Sporting saw them turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 win thanks to three goals in the last fifteen minutes.

Another team who grabbed a 3-2 away win was Beira-Mar, who stunned Braga at the Estadio AXA. It was Domingos Paciencia’s first home defeat in the league since taking charge of the Arsenalistas 18 month ago.

FC Porto vs Benfica Preview

Sunday November 7 2010,
Tags: FC Porto, Benfica, Liga Sagres, Portugal
Millions of people throughout Portugal and many more around the globe will be glued to their TVs, radios and Internet connections on Sunday evening as FC Porto host Benfica in a classic of Portuguese football.
“Nobody wins championships in the first third of the season.” These words were uttered by Benfica coach Jorge Jesus a day before he sends his side out at the Estadio do Dragao to face runaway leaders FC Porto.

Although mathematically correct, logic surely argues against Jesus’ statement. Should Porto beat their bitterest of rivals they will have a ten-point lead at the top of the Liga ZON Sagres table after 10 games of the Portuguese league season. More significantly, they would have dropped only two points in those ten games. So it is highly unlikely that they would allow such a healthy advantage to slip in the remaining 20 games.

The Benfica coach’s words were probably uttered more in the hope of relieving some of the pressure on his players rather than his actual convictions. Having won the league in such swashbuckling fashion in 2009/10, deep down, the Benfica players must know that victory - or at the very least avoiding defeat - is a must to get back in the title race.

Portugal Liga Preview: Week 10 (Nov 5-8)

Friday November 5 2010,
Round 10 of the Liga ZON Sagres sees the great classic of Portuguese football between FC Porto and Benfica, with the Monday night game between Sporting and Guimaraes also providing a mouth-watering second course.
A resplendent 2010/11 version of FC Porto know that if they beat bitter rivals Benfica at home on Sunday evening they will create a 10-gap at the top of the table. Given the form of Porto and all their title rivals this season, it is no exaggeration to say the title will be practically wrapped up by the start of November.

Guimaraes and Sporting (3rd and 4th in the table respectively) will be looking to take advantage of the fact that at least one of the top two must drop points.

Elsewhere Braga will strive to take their good recent European form into domestic play, while Maritimo will look to continue their steady climb away from the basement.

Portugal Liga Report: Week 9 (Oct 29 - Nov 1)

Sunday October 31 2010,
Not even a biblical style downpour can stop FC Porto. The Dragons beat Academica 1-0 in a game played in atrocious weather conditions. Benfica also won ahead of the clash of the titans next week.
FC Porto made it 15 wins in 16 games in all competitions this season thanks to Silvestre Varela’s stunning volley against Academica on a stormy night in Coimbra.

Benfica also won, 2-0 versus Paços de Ferreira. The Eagles were set on their way by a marvellous Pablo Aimar goal, evoking memories of a certain other diminutive Argentine of yesteryear. The victories for Porto and Benfica set the scene for a fascinating battle between Portugal’s two biggest clubs next week.

Braga’s shock defeat at Rio Ave, together with Academica’s loss, left the door open for a host of sides playing later in the weekend to move into third place in the standings. Vitoria Guimaraes and Sporting duly took advantage with wins that moved them up to 3rd and 4th in the table respectively.

Can high-flying Academica halt the win machine that goes by the name of FC Porto? Benfica look to take advantage of any slip-up from the leaders a week before the clash of the titans.
Liga ZON Sagres - Week 9 Preview, by Tom Kundert

There is no doubt about the match of the weekend in Round Nine. The all-conquering FC Porto travel to Coimbra to take on one of the season’s surprise packages, 3rd-placed Academica. Sporting and Braga are on the road and will both be aiming to extend a run of three straight victories in all competitions.
