Following their heroics in the Champions League Chelsea will continue to challenge for the league title as they make a trip to Wales where they face 15th placed Swansea City.

Preview: Chelsea looking for three vital points at the Liberty

With either of Liverpool and Man City poised to drop points as the two title contenders go head to head on Sunday, Chelsea will be hoping to take advantage of the situation by grabbing all three points during their weekend encounter against Swansea City.

A win coupled with a Liverpool loss could allow the Blues to return to the Premier League summit.

Mourinho’s men are likely to be in a buoyant mood following their emphatic victory over Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League. The London side had been subjected to a 3-1 defeat in the first leg and were expected to crash out of the tournament, but a spirited performance which saw Demba Ba score in the dying moments ensured that Chelsea make it to the last four of the competition. The Blues have had a stuttering form as of late as far as league outings are concerned. Their 6-0 mauling of Arsenal was followed by a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace, however their recent meeting with Stoke ended in a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Blues.

Chelsea however have had less luck against their counterparts on Sunday, especially when playing at their home. The last two meetings between the two clubs at the Liberty Stadium have ended in draws and Swansea further denied Chelsea of a place in the Capital One Cup semi-final last season when they emerged victorious over a two leg affair. The Jacks pulled off an impressive 2-0 victory at the Stamford Bridge and showed incredible resilience in the second leg to keep the scores level at 0-0.

Even though Swansea this season have produced below par performances, Chelsea’s Portuguese tactician has insisted that it will still be a difficult test for his side.

"They are a good team, they play good football. Especially at Swansea it is never easy and Chelsea knows that better than other teams,” said the Portuguese.

"They still need the three points, they are not in big danger like other teams but they still need a couple of points to stay in the Premier League and of course they will try to get points out of this game."

Mourinho also had words of praise for his players who have not been featuring regularly but have remained professional, the Portuguese singled out Senegalese international Demba Ba after his heroics against PSG last time out.

"People are working well and hard. The ones that are not playing so regular, all of them are being good professionals to try to be ready," Mourinho added. "You could see Demba as an example as a player who doesn't play a lot and was ready to try to respond. All of them, they were ready. They are a good group, they are good friends, they have a good relationship.”

Swansea’s recent form on the other hand has done them no favors with the Welsh side gradually drawing near to the relegation zone. The Swans have recorded a victory in just one of their last five matches and are currently three points ahead of 18th placed Fulham who recorded a 1-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday. However the match against Chelsea might be Swansea’s final difficult fixture, with relatively easier matches to follow against Newcastle, Aston Villa, Southampton and league bottomers Sunderland.

Swansea coach Garry Monk will have the luxury to choose from an injury free side as the Swans look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat at Hull last week. Chelsea on the other hand will have to do without their talismanic playmaker Eden Hazard who suffered a calf injury in the Champions League match against PSG and will not be available for the weekend tie.

Mohamed Salah and Nemanja Matic will return to the squad after being ineligible in the Champions League, whereas midfielder Ramires will be available for selection having served his three match ban for the red card he received in the match against Aston Villa. Demba Ba could be handed his first start since October following his last ditch goal against PSG which guided Chelsea to the semi-final of the competitions.

Swansea will have to make good use of their possession if they are to get anything out of the match. The Swans average 60% possession at home this season but have won just five of the 16 matches they have played at the Liberty. However Chelsea’s away form will be a source of confidence for the Welsh side, with the Blues having lost all of their last three away games in all competitions. Further to this Chelsea have not managed to record an away victory against Swansea since their promotion to the Premier League three years back.
