Borussia Dortmund defender Matt Hummels has rued his side's missed chances against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. The German claims he was “conflicted” and that his side had the chance to produce one of the “biggest sensations in football” but exit the competition with just an awesome night.
Borussia Dortmund played Real Madrid in the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday night for the second leg game of the quarter-finals match-up. Die Schwarzgelben were 3-0 down on aggregate and needed a win by the same amount, at the very least, to stand a chance of qualifying for the semis and after two first half goals from Marco Reus, it started to look like a possibe scenario. However, they failed to add the third and thus bowed out of Europe's elite league.
"I am conflicted," Matt Hummels told reporters after the game. "We showed an evening that people won't forget quickly.
"We had several great chances in the second half. We could have produced one of the biggest sensations in football - now it was just an awesome evening.”
