The Citizens return to Premier League action after a three week absence and will now go head to head with Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Preview: City looking to respond after consecutive cup defeats

Last time Manuel Pellegrini's side played in a Premier League fixture was back on the 22nd of February when a solitary strike from Yaya Toure secured all three points for Man City against Stoke. Since then the Citizens have been involved in three consecutive cup ties. Even though City were able to make the most of their Capital One Cup tie as they clinched the trophy at the expense of Sunderland their FA cup and European endeavours were less than successful.

City failed to beat Wigan for the second consecutive season in the FA Cup as the Latics knocked out the Etihad side from a competition they last won back in 2011. With their chances of recording an unparalleled quadruple already put to bed, City’s chances of winning a treble were quashed after they lost to Barcelona in their subsequent tie. A 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Catalans in the second leg effectively ended the tie for the Citizens who had already lost 2-0 at home to Barca in the return leg.

Man City will now be hoping to return to the league summit, something they can achieve if they manage to win all their remaining matches. The Citizens have played three less matches than league leaders Chelsea and nine points from those matches will put them on level points with the Blues.

However in order to achieve that City will need to produce better performance than they have in the prior month. The Sky Blues extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 20 matches after a 5-1 mauling of Tottenham but their performances have experienced a downward spiral since then. Of their last eight matches City have won just three and lost four, a statistic which will have to improve if the Citizens wish to add another trophy to their list of achievements this season.

Yaya Toure on the other hand remains sceptical of his team’s chances and even though City have a good chance of returning to the top of the table, the Ivorian has insisted that it is Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea who are favourites for the title.

"Yes, we have three games in hand, but we could lose all three of them. Chelsea, for me, are the favourites,” said the 30 year old.

"We just need to keeping working and try to win all of the games," he continued. "We know it’s going to be difficult.

The 30 year old has taken positives from the defeats Man City have suffered in recent weeks and remains optimistic that his side can achieve their league objectives this season.

"But when you lose games, you learn more about yourselves. Sometimes when you lose, it’s not bad.

"Teams come and they are desperate to beat us, so it’s always tough. Teams are very motivated against us.

"You have to understand we are not a machine. We have to move on and think about the Premier League. With the players we have, I still think we can do it."

Man City had been rampant in the first half of the Premier League campaign and had scored a mammoth 100 goals in all competitions by mid January. However since their 5-1 win at White Hart Lane back in January City have scored just eight goals in as many fixtures. Much of this has been down to fitness concerns surrounding star striker Sergio Aguero who after a prolonged absence could be out for more time after suffering a relapse of his hamstring injury in the match against Barcelona.

Hull on the other hand have been enjoying a fine campaign and will be hoping to heap misery on what has already been a week to forget for the Etihad side. The Tigers come into this match at the back of a 3-0 victory at the expense of Sunderland which booked their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Steve Bruce’s men have won three of their last four matches and will be hoping to build on their good run.

Jelavic and Shane Long were both cup tied for Hull’s FA Cup fixture against Sunderland but will be back for the weekend tie. Jake Livermore is a doubt for the match but could return if he shakes off his thigh injury, Robbie Brady, Joe Dudgeon and Paul McShane on the other hand remain long term absentees for the Tigers.
