Hamburg, expected to battle for the European spots this season, is instead fighting for survival; the team they are about to face is not about to do them any favors.

Preview: Can Mirko Slomka help HSV survive?

Hamburger SV has a clock in their stadium; the clock has been ticking continuously since 1963. The club from the North of Germany was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga and has never been relegated. Even Bayern has spent less time in the Bundesliga as they were not a founding member. This season has seen everything at the club fall apart.

HSV started with Thorsten Fink in charge but eventually, he had to part ways with the side because of just how poor they were doing. Bert Van Marwijk, a massively experienced coach, was then appointed. And last week, even Van Marwijk’s time came to an end. Mirko Slomka has now been charged with saving the dinosaurs of the Bundesliga from extinction.

A look at the injury list will certainly give Slomka a headache. The captain and the person who the fans directed their ire at, Rafael Van der Vaart is out. Ivo Ilicevic, Michael Mancienne, Maximilian Beister and Kerem Demirbay are all out. His opposite number, Jürgen Klopp, will be without the trio of Ilkay Gündogan, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Neven Subotic.

Klopp, having seen Leverkusen stutter badly in recent weeks, knows that second place is up for grabs. His side is only a point behind them in third. The championship is almost out of reach for them but other goals are still attainable. They are still alive in the DFB Pokal. Klopp will have to be careful with his team selection as he has to keep one eye on a crucial European match against Zenit St. Petersburg.

His side took apart Eintracht Frankfurt, 4-0, in their last match, their third win in as many games. Hamburg meanwhile lost to bottom of the table Eintracht Braunschweig 4-2. To be completely assured of safety, HSV will have to finish in at least fifteenth. Currently, they sit three points behind fifteenth placed Stuttgart.

Can Slomka turn it around for HSV?
