Manchester City will continue their hunt for top spot when they take on a strong Newcastle United side in the Barclays Premier League on Match-day 21.

Preview: Does Newcastle have the tools for an upset?

Newcastle United has been causing a stir in the Premier League this season. They currently lie eighth in the Premier League table. However, their recent performances have not lived up to expectations. Following an emphatic 5-1 win over nine man Stoke City, Alan Pardew’s men lost to Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion respectively in the league. They followed up that result with a 1-2 defeat to newly revived Cardiff in the FA Cup.

In the defeat against Arsenal, Newcastle played with plenty of spirit. The Gunners were troubled throughout the match and had to be very resolute to keep out a good Newcastle attack. Manuel Pellegrini mentioned this according to Sky Sports prior to this match:

“Of course it (the match against Newcastle) will be a real fight.

Newcastle in the last two games have lost, but when they lost against Arsenal one or two weeks ago they were playing very well and they were fighting for the first position in the table.”

If there is any team an opposition would not want to face during a crisis, it is Manchester City. They have beaten Tottenham 6-0, Norwich 7-0, Arsenal 6-3 and Manchester United, 4-1. Three of the four opponents mentioned are not names to be scoffed at. City has already won 14 games in the league this season – they are tied with Arsenal and now Chelsea for that number. If Arsenal slip up, a win for City will take them to the top of the table.

They will be without Stevan Jovetic, Jack Rodwell and Sergio Aguero. Jesus Navas is a slight doubt due to a knee problem as is Yaya Toure because of an ankle issue. David Silva is available once again after being suspended for the match against Swansea. For Newcastle, Ryan Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini are out. Tim Krul might return after missing the FA Cup clash against Cardiff while Yohann Cabaye is also set to make a comeback. Matthieu Debuchy is suspended.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side will not take their foot of the gas. Pellegrini added encouraging words for his club’s supporters but discouraging words for the opposition’s supporters as Sky Sports noted:

"It always seems the opposition are not very good when you score so many goals but, I repeat, there are no easy games in the Premier League.

Maybe when you finish the game you might think it was easy because we played very, very well, but not all the games will be exactly the same.

Maybe playing exactly the same we might score only one or two goals. It is very important to improve in all senses as a team."
