Cameroon aim to qualify for the FIFA World Cup by beating Tunisia at home.Preview: Samuel Eto’o’s divided Cameroon in danger of self-destruction

Divisions in Cameroon’s camp are apparent with Samuel Eto’o claiming that he is the victim of a conspiracy. The Chelsea striker was quoted as saying in the build up to the match:

“We need to unite, chat during the game and do our best to obtain the result that the entire nation is expecting from us and, since our coach is right here, I want him to help stop the act of not passing the ball to a player on the field.”

However, coach Volker Finke has chosen not to throw his support behind Eto’o as he replied:

“I didn’t see anything of such a nature during that match. [...] There could be some issues between the players but nobody refused to kick the ball to Eto’o during that encounter. To me it sounds much like a kindergarten talk.”

Whichever side of the story is true, the reality is that Cameroon’s national team is divided and this factor could come at a great benefit for Tunisia on Sunday. The Eagles of Carthage failed to qualify for the last World Cup tournament in South Africa where the Indomitable Lions were the first participants to crash out after an abysmal performance in the group stages.

On Saturday, Nigeria became the first African nation to reach Brazil. They defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar to sail through 4-1 on aggregate amid bitter comments from the Ethiopians who felt hard done by the referee in both legs. The Super Eagles eventually became the first defending AFCON champions to qualify for a World Cup.

Later in the day, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire produced an excellent match in Casablanca, Morocco. The Lions, who needed a 2-0 victory to stun the Elephants, went all out to attack. Didier Drogba conceded a penalty in the final stages of the game and Moussa Sow scored from the spot. From there, the tempo increased. The Ivoirians defended with all their men before Salomon Kalou broke the Senegalese’s heart with a late equalizer.

Tunisia or Cameroon will be the third of five African countries to join the list of 2014 FIFA World Cup contenders.
