The Bundesliga is set to witness yet another fiery Bavarian derby; a thirty year old record will be on the line when Bayern takes on Augsburg in the Allianz Arena on 9th November, 2013.

Bayern Munich are poised to maintain the top spot in the Bundesliga by beating Augsburg.Preview: Bayern primed to take the honors and keep Bundesliga table top spot

FC Bayern München has not lost a Bavarian derby in almost even years now. The final derby of the past season is a memory which the Bavarians surely store with plenty of fondness. Bayern was presented the shield they longed for that day. They struggled to get out of the blocks on Match-day 33 in the midst of May. It took a Bayern side filled with confidence 69 minutes to finally find the back of the net. Rather unsurprisingly, it was Thomas Müller who did so in classic Raumdeuter fashion.

Ahead of this meeting, question marks remain over whether Müller will start; this is down to his poor form of late rather than injuries. The department of health (and injuries) at Bayern has been inundated this season. Bastian Schweinsteiger joined in recently; he is set to have ankle surgery to be able to play “completely free of pain” by his own admission.

Arjen Robben is set to return to the squad after missing the previous two matches due to injury. Arjen was definitely missed in Plzen judging by Bayern’s poor performance there. Thiago Alcantara is close to a return to the squad. Claudio Pizarro and Xherdan Shaqiri are currently in rehabilitation. Holger Badstuber is out until June 2014. Panagiotis Vlachodimos and Raul Bobadilla are out for Augsburg. Marwin Hitz will continue in goal ahead of Alexander Manninger.

Augsburg will be mildly confident coming into this one. While they have lost all their recent meetings against Bayern, they have held their own well in most of the matches. Also, the ‘little brothers’ have already won four matches this season, more than they have ever won in the Bundesliga in this stage of the season. Markus Weinzierl, an FCB man himself as a player for four seasons, pointed out exactly that according to Bayern’s official website:

“We’re not just going to go there and park the bus. We’ll dig as deep as we possibly can and see if we can cause a sensation.”

Pep Guardiola as usual has studied his opponents and worked out their strengths and weaknesses. Guardiola has perhaps saved himself from some added criticism due to the results; his team has delivered rather uninspired performances in recent weeks. Also, his attempts to use a “falsche neun” and bench Mario Mandzukic have not really worked out. Super Mario has been scoring freely this season.

Pep brought out the attributes of the team placed thirteenth in the Bundesliga as noted by Bayern’s official website:

“They play a lot of diagonal passes from the full-backs to the striker. They have very strong legs, they put in good crosses and they’re very aggressive.”

Finally, roughly three decades ago, Hamburger SV set a league record that is yet to be broken but has already been equaled. They went through 36 games without getting beaten. If Bayern come out of this one unscathed, they will have gone 37 Bundesliga matches without defeat. Uli Hoeness, who has legal proceedings to ponder about currently, added extra weight to the record. According to Bayern’s official website, Hoeness said the following:

“The previous 36 matches will be worthless if we lose against Augsburg. It’ll have been all for nothing.”
