Rivals Uruguay and Argentina will clash in Montevideo in a World Cup Qualifying match on Tuesday the 15th of October 2013.

Uruguay will tackle a do-or-die affair at home to already-qualified Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.Preview: Uruguay hoping to revel in difficult Argentina test

La Celeste face a horrendous task at hand as they lock horns with South American giants Argentina. Uruguay currently fifth in the table  have an outside chance of making a direct qualification to World Cup 2014 and it will only be an unexpected set of results which will book Uruguay’s place in the World Cup in Brazil.

Óscar Tabárez’s men owing to their inferior goal difference to the likes of Ecuador and Chile will not just have to expect their counterparts to lose their matches, but will themselves have to score a victory with a goal margin greater than three in order to finish the group higher than the fifth place.

With an automatic qualification unlikely, Uruguay captain Diego Lugano has admitted that his team has its minds set on the intercontinental play off against Jordon.

"Although there are still chances of qualifying in fourth place, the big objective, to be realistic, is the clash with Jordan in the playoff," said Lugano, after Uruguay's 1-0 defeat against Ecuador in Quito

"We have evidently once again taken the longest road to qualify, but the most important thing in all this is to be at the World Cup.”

Uruguay were put to a similar test four years back when they had to win a playoff against Costa Rica to qualify for the World Cup 2010. The 32 year old who currently plays his trade at Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion has taken encouragement from the fact that even though it took a play off for his team to qualify for the tournament last time out, they were able to make the most out of it by reaching the semi-finals.

"Four years ago, we suffered in such a decider against Costa Rica and then had a great World Cup so all we want is to get to Brazil and it doesn't matter in what position nor on which day."
For Argentina the clash does not hold much relevance for they have already booked their ticket to Brazil. But coming against one of their biggest rivals is enough motivation for Alejandro Sabella’s men to put up their best showing.

The battle of the Río de la Plata as it is termed is one of football’s oldest rivalries and never fails to entertain its viewers.

However last time the two sides met in October last year, the match was merely a one side affair with a star studded Argentina side too hot for the Uruguayans to handle.

A Lionel Messi brace coupled with a Sergio Aguero goal in the 74th minute gave La Albiceleste an easy 3-0 victory against their rivals. Argentina are currently top of the table and one of the favourites to lift the Cup in Brazil next year.
