When it comes to sports, soccer dominates above other disciplines. And two world football clubs have an edge over the rest in terms of social media influence; they are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi contribute in the success of Real Madrid and Barcelona in terms of social media. The pair constitutes what is arguably the hottest club football rivalry on the planet: El Clasico. Now, this classic fight has gone a step higher from the pitch to the social media platform. It is absolutely no wonder how big the impact of Barca and Real Madrid is online, considering the stardom factor of names like Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ex-Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho can boast about halting the Catalans’ clear authority in El Clasico. The outspoken Portuguese landed at the Santiago Bernabeu at a time when the Camp Nou was in full swing under the management of Pep Guardiola. Mourinho commenced his Clasico adventure with a terrible 5-0 defeat in November 2010 but gradually learnt how to daunt the tiki-taka styled Blaugrana.

He left Los Blancos with an encouraging record against Barcelona which includes victory in the 2012 Supercopa de España, the 2012/13 Copa del Rey semi-finals and the last La Liga meeting dating from March 2 this year. Meanwhile, on social media, the Galacticos remain behind their greatest foes.

Earlier on Tuesday, Forbes announced Real Madrid as the most valuable club in the world at $3.3 billion ahead of Manchester United ($3.165 billion) and Barcelona ($2.6 billion). The combination of Facebook and Twitter followers, however, placed Barca in pole position with over 60 million fans – almost 10 million more than Florentino Perez’s club.

Forbes’ revelation was echoed by ZenithOptimedia in the launch of ‘The Social League’ on July 16, 2013. The infographics are available on our Facebook and Google Plus profiles.
