Polish international forward Karol Swiderski has joined Serie A club Verona from Major League Soccer's Charlotte FC, the American club said on Thursday.

Swiderski joins Verona initially on loan with a purchase clause for the Italian team.

The 27-year-old joined Charlotte in 2022 from Greek club PAOK and in 61 MLS games scored 22 goals while adding 10 assists.

Swiderski has occupied a 'Designated Player' slot with the North Carolina club, meaning he could be replaced with another player whose salary does not count against the overall salary cap.

Charlotte recently appointed former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith as head coach and he is aiming to rebuild and strengthen the squad.

"This opportunity is in Charlotte FC's best interest as we reconfigure our roster under a new head coach. Karol has always given his best on the pitch for us, and he was clear with his intention to pursue this opportunity. In this situation, the club was not going to stand in his way," Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said.

"We now have key roster-building mechanisms available to us that we can use to bolster our squad throughout the remainder of this window and during the summer transfer window."

Charlotte recently acquired an additional international roster spot in a deal with DC United.

Verona currently rank 16th in 20-team Serie A.
