Preview

Two beloved European teams lock horns on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League, with German giants Dortmund facing continental royalty AC Milan on Matchday 2. This 3 p.m. ET showdown will take place at the iconic Signal Iduna Park as both teams go in search of their first win in this competition.

BVB enter this game bottom of the table as they are the only team in this group to have lost a game. The German giants kicked off their campaign away to PSG, and here is where their opening day defeat occurred, with the Bundesliga side losing 2-0 at the Parc des Princes.

Kylian Mbappe grabbed the opening goal before Dortmund's very own former player Achraf Hakimi increased the deficit. However, things have been going well in the German top flight for Edin Terzic's side.

Reus and Co. have played six games so far, winning all but two of those matches. In fact, the hosts are yet to lose a game in the Bundesliga and welcome AC Milan to the Signal Iduna Park on the back of their 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday.

Nonetheless, Dortmund need to improve things at the back. The German club have conceded in all but two games so far this campaign and will face a tricky attack in Wednesday's Champions League affair.

Unlike BVB, AC Milan did not suffer a defeat on the opening day. However, the Italian powerhouse suffered a disappointing result nonetheless, drawing nil-nil with Newcastle in the previous round.

After the full-time whistle, everyone who watched the game asked themselves how the Rossoneri came away with anything less than three points. The Serie A heavyweights dominated the Premier League side but profligacy in front of goal forced them to settle for a mere point at the San Siro.

However, Pioli's men made up for that domestically, winning the following three games in Serie A. The most recent outing was a home showdown with Lazio, with Christian Pulisic continuing his excellent start at the San Siro by getting on the scoresheet.

And with that, Leao and Co. moved level on points with league leaders Inter Milan — but trail their city rivals on goal difference partly thanks to that 5-1 Milan Derby thrashing.

That has been Milan's only defeat of the season so it will be interesting to see if they can keep this running at the Signal Iduna Park. Do not miss this clash.

Team news

Dortmund: Mateu Morey or Thomas Meunier are injured while Marcel Sabitzer is yet to fully recover from his adductor issue. Emre Can, however, should return to the lineup.

AC Milan: Ruben Loftus-Cheek picked up an injury in the win over Lazio and will miss this tie, joining Ismael Bennacer and Rade Krunic on the sidelines. Mattia Caldara and Pierre Kalulu are also out for this tie.

Key stats

  • Dortmund have lost only once in their last 15 home games in the UEFA Champions League (W9, D5).

  • AC Milan have lost a Champions League game against only two Bundesliga teams, with BVB being one of them.

  • These two clubs have met only once before in the UEFA Champions League and that was in 2002-03, with each team winning their home tie.

  • However, the head-to-head record doesn't favor the Rossoneri, with the Italian giants winning two and losing three of their five encounters with Dortmund.

  • However, Pioli's men have not conceded a goal in their last three Champions League group-stage matches.
