Preview

Inter Miami, the MLS franchise whose fortunes have turned around following the arrival of a certain Lionel Messi, are back in action on Sunday, with the Herons preparing for an exciting fixture. Tata Martino's men will travel to the BMO Stadium to lock horns with LAFC as both teams eye a return to winning ways.

While the hosts are well on their way to a spot in the final series, they enter this clash on the back of a disappointing result away to Charlotte, with Denis Bouanga and Co. losing 2-1 in last weekend's away game.

And this is only one of many slip-ups the Black and Gold have suffered this year, with LAFC winning only five of their last 15 Major League Soccer outings. Steve Cherundolo's side still rank as one of the best teams in the Western Conference but others are hot on their heels.

The reigning MLS Cup champions sit in third with 40 points and are only one behind second-placed Seattle Sounders. However, LAFC are only four points ahead of San Jose, who are in eighth, one of the playoff spots — the hosts have a handful of games in hand, though.

The home side will become only the third MLS club to play Inter Miami since Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets arrived. Furthermore, the visitors' form will make things difficult for the Los Angeles powerhouse but both Carlos Vela and the head coach are not preoccupied by the aforementioned seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.

As for Inter Miami, they too are aiming to return to winning ways when they visit the BMO Stadium, having dropped points in their most recent MLS outing. That came against Nashville, the team they beat in the Leagues Cup final, except there was no penalty shootout to bail the Herons.

The opposition had numerous opportunities to score past Drake Callender but ultimately failed, with that game ending in a goalless draw, thus stretching the club's unbeaten record since Messi made his debut.

Prior to this stalemate was a home clash with the New York Red Bulls, with La Pulga entertaining once more, scoring his first MLS goal on his U.S. top-flight debut. Nonetheless, Tata Martino's men sit second from bottom in the table and are 11 points behind the playoff spots.

Team news

LAFC: Diego Palacios has been given time away from the team due to personal reasons while Jesus Murillo and Diego Rosales are doubts. Carlos Vela came off last weekend at roughly the hour mark but the Mexican attacker should start and partner Denis Bouanga in attack.

Inter Miami: Corentin Jean, Franco Negri, and Ian Fray are all absent due to ACL issues. Meanwhile, a foot injury will see Gregore miss this tie. Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets should start but it will be interesting to see whether Leonardo Campana starts in the lineup or on the bench.

Key stats

  • This will only be the third meeting between these two clubs.

  • Not only do LAFC have a perfect record in this fixture, winning both ties, but the MLS Cup holders are yet to concede against Inter Miami.

  • The Herons, however, are unbeaten in their last 10 games across all competitions, winning all but one — though many of those victories came through penalties.

  • So far, Lionel Messi has scored 11 goals and assisted three for his new club.

  • With 27 goals conceded from 25 MLS fixtures so far, LAFC boast the joint-best defense in the Western Conference.
