The champions of Belgium will hope to continue their remarkable run in the Champions League when they host Benfica on Wednesday.

Club Brugge will host Benfica for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 matchup at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday night. The Belgian club has had a memorable camapign in European football s so far and will be poised to carry on with their brilliant run, starting with their first game of the knockout.

In a group that featured the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Leverkusen, and FC Porto, Scott Parker's team was able to earn a runners-up spot after accumulating 11 points from a possible 18. The unprecedented achievement was able to earn the Blue-Black a piece of history as they will now feature in the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.

Nevertheless, against Benfica, Brugge will hope for an improvement in performance and form considering the underwhelming run they have put together in recent weeks. They will go into the mid-week's affair with just one win from their last 10 competitive outings. In the period, they have registered as many as seven draws and two defeats. For Benfica, the situation is pretty contrasting.

Although they come into the Round of 16 clash on the back of an elimination from the Portuguese Cup, the Eagles are well positioned to earn a favorable result against Club Brugge. So far, they have just two of their last 10 matches in all competitions, winning six and drawing the other two. In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, they have been unplayable, putting together a run of seven wins in nine outings to remain atop the table.

Transferring the form to the Champions League should not be much of a task for Schmidt's men who held their own to finish as winners of Group H with four out of six wins. The odds are also in favor of the Portuguese club who has won nine of their previous 14 meetings with Belgian opposition. This, coupled with the fact that they are unbeaten in their last seven games in Europe, should serve as a basis for an excellent performance on Wednesday.
