Former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool striker John Aldridge has big wishes for the Merseyside Reds in the Carling Cup this season. The 52-year-old is gearing up ahead of the Exeter City match.
As a player, John Aldridge won the Football League Cup once. This triumph happened during the 1985/86 season when he was at Oxford United. A year later, Aldridge reached the Football League Cup final again. This time, it was with Liverpool.

However, he and the Merseyside Reds lost 2-1 to eventual winners Arsenal in front of 96,000 spectators at the Wembley Stadium. John Aldridge is now hoping Liverpool’s current team will do what his side couldn’t do in 1987. The former player stated on Liverpoolecho.co.uk:

“The Carling Cup is a priority for Liverpool this season and that’s something we haven’t said for many years. We want to get to Wembley and this competition offers us a great chance of doing that.”

To begin their 2011/12 Carling Cup campaign, Liverpool have a Second Round away fixture against Exeter City to play on Wednesday night. Giving his thoughts on the chances of the visitors, John Aldridge concluded:

“With a stronger squad this season the boss [Kenny Dalglish] can make half a dozen changes without weakening the side too much.

“I think you’ve got to play a strong side and try to get the tie won early on. Then you can bring players off and start thinking about the Bolton game.”
