After letting Edin Dzeko’s stoppable strike in the Community Shield, David de Gea committed another error last weekend… but Ferguson insists this is all about adapting to English football!
David de Gea didn’t have a great English Premier League debut as Manchester United survived a scare on Match-day 1 of the 2011/12 domestic season. The ex-Atletico Madrid and Spanish Primera Division goalkeeper conceded a cheap goal from West Brom’s Shane Long a few minutes before half-time.

Wayne Rooney had previously given the Red Devils a great start with a 13th minute goal. But it is only Steven Reid’s late own goal (which some viewed as Ashley Young’s strike) that stole all three points for Ferguson’s boys. Now just as much as the media covered Manchester United’s opening victory, David de Gea’s unimpressive goalkeeping in the first period which allowed Shane Long to score made rounds.

However, Alex Ferguson is not bothered by the criticism that is presently surrounding the young shot stopper. Fergie has backed De Gea to develop into an icon as he maintains his trust in the player. The Manchester United manager commented on David de Gea’s performance as Mirror Football could quote:

“It was a slack goal to lose. David should have done better, his concentration cost him the goal. But he took a battering in the second half—when he should have been protected more by the referee but he wasn’t.

“But he is young and he will come through. Welcome to English football! It’s a hard process coming from Europe.

“Even Peter Schmeichel had a torrid time because his first game was at Wimbledon on a Wednesday night, but he became arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all time.”

David de Gea joined Manchester United in June this year. The 20-year-old goalkeeper cost Manchester United a bit more than £18M on the transfer market. De Gea is poised to keep his position in post for the Red Devils against Tottenham Hotspur on Match-day 2 of the English Premier League.
