It's official: El Clasico will be held on December 18. La Liga have confirmed the new date for the immensely popular Barcelona vs Real Madrid fixture after coming to an agreement with the Spanish FA and the two involved clubs.
This Camp Nou clash was originally scheduled to be played on October 26. However, after prominent Catalan separatist leaders were sentenced to jail time, unrest broke out in the region.
Due to the political instability and insecurity, the game was postponed. Los Blancos and the Blaugrana both agreed to reschedule this clash on December 18, which the Spanish FA accepted, but La Liga initially opposed this decision.
The league organizers did not prefer this date as that date falls on a Wednesday and not a weekend, which would hinder the audience count. Furthermore, there were fears of TV clash with the Copa del Rey and FIFA Club World Cup.
