Match Preview

The Portland Thorns and the North Carolina Courage will go head to head inside the Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. The upcoming clash will be a rematch of last year's NWSL Championship in which Thorns run off as eventual winners to take their title run to two.

A lone goal by Lindsay Horan was enough to grab the victory at the Orland City Stadium and on Saturday, the midfielder and her teammates will be hoping to secure a third consecutive title against their familiar foes.

Despite having a rough start to life in the league this season, an upturn in fortune in July set the Thorns right on track to finish the regular season with a 7-1-1 record. Having progressed to the final of the championship on the back of a win over Seattle Reign in the semifinal round of the playoffs, Mark Parsons and his ladies will be hoping the momentum will be enough to secure them a third successive title.

Nonetheless, the opponent they come up against has improved in diverse ways since last October's final. The North Carolina Courage has had the best regular season campaign in NWSL history this year as it managed to accumulate a record 57 regular-season points.

The team secured 17 wins and netted 53 times in their quest to win this year's NWSL Shield. Paul Riley's ladies, on Tuesday, beat the Chicago Red Stars via a 2-0 scoreline to secure their spot in the final and having finished 15 points ahead of the Thorns in the regular season, they may very well fancy their chance of yet a back-to-back win regardless of the opposition's prowess and the history between them on the same stage.

With the Courage standing as the last team to have defeated the Thorns in the regular season since July, a crunchy affair should await fans at the Providence Park.
