Real Madrid don’t only have to keep winning in La Liga. They also need Barcelona to drop points, so defender David Mateos hopes that a miracle will turn Hercules vs Barcelona into an upset.
The reverse fixture occurred back in September as La Liga entered its second match-day. At everyone’s surprise, minnows Hercules trampled over almighty Barcelona... and not in any stadium, but at the Camp Nou where the Catalans usually prove to be stronger.

This weekend, Hercules will be looking to repeat this feat in their backyard and their chances of achieving that look quite balanced: in Alicante, Hercules are a strong side and they currently carry a record of 4 consecutive home wins since losing to Real Madrid late in October.

So can they embarrass rampant Barcelona?

According to Real Madrid defender David Mateos, Saturday night’s show at the Estadio Jose Rico Perez could make Los Blancos’ night ahead of their game against Osasuna the day after. Echoing his side’s desire, Mateoas told reporters:

“Every game is different and in the Camp Nou, Hercules won a major victory. Nobody would have predicted that to happen.

“Now, we are confident that they can do us a favour. We know that we’ve got to win our match [against Osasuna] as we want to keep picking up points.

“Since the start of the season, our intention has always been to go for 3 titles. Among them is La Liga and we are right there fighting for it against Barcelona.”

12th-placed Hercules could indeed make Real Madrid a favour. But with Barcelona being fresh from emphatic wins lately, Mateos’ belief in Hercules will sound naive to a big part of football’s public.
