Preview: How they got here

Honduras

In what was definitely by far the most interesting qualifying tournament fans have seen in a long time, Honduras ultimately ended up finishing fourth in their group. Los Catrachos beat group winners Mexico 3-2 on the final matchday, but were not expected to even qualify for the World Cup as heading into that game, the USMNT were ahead of them in the standings. However, the Stars and Stripes suffered a shock loss to bottom placed Trinidad & Tobago, and Panama also beat Costa Rica to snatch third place. As a result, the Yanks ended up missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1986, while Honduras now will have a chance to feature at their third consecutive tournament should they beat Australia over two legs.

Australia

The Socceroos actually found qualification a lot more difficult than expected. Surprisingly, Australia ended up finishing third in their group, with Saudi Arabia in particular punching well above their weight as they somehow managed to narrowly pip them to second spot and snatch the runners-up berth to finish only one point behind group winners Japan. Many had expected it to actually be a battle between Australia and Japan for top spot in Group B, but Saudi Arabia obviously had other plans to spoil the party. As a result, the Socceroos had to try their luck through a two-legged clash against a dogged Syrian side hoping to give their fans something to cheer about by featuring at their very first World Cup.

Syria, who have managed to put in an impressive shift despite their problems back home, put up quite a fight against Australia, and again showed their knack for scoring late goals by forcing the tie to extra time. However, the Socceroos, through the evergreen Tim Cahill, were able to hang on to snatch a hard-fought 2-1 win (3-2 on aggregate) to break Syrian hearts and thus set up an inter-continental play-off with Honduras.

Both teams have had their fair share of drama throughout their respective World Cup qualifying campaigns, and it will indeed be very interesting to see what takes place during the first leg on Friday evening.
