The midfielder wants to add one more trophy to La Albiceleste's record after a 24-year drought of international silverware.

If Lionel Messi's generation wants to add their names to the team's record books, the 2018 World Cup might be the last chance they get to do so.

At least that's how Javier Mascherano thinks, following the complicated road La Albiceleste had to follow to make it to next year's competion.

In an interview with TyC Sports, "El Jefecito" pointed out this team's need for silverware after wasting many chances in the past.

"Next year's World Cup will be this generation's last chance to win a major trophy," the 33-year old stated.

"If we had failed to qualify, it wouldn't be a surprise to watch some of us call it quits from the National Team. I believe that the current coaching staff would have done the same," the midfielder added.

The midfielder was a key member of the squad that lost the 2014 World Cup facing Germany and the 2015 & 2016 Copa América titles against Chile.

Mascherano admitted that the team struggled in their efforts to make it to Russia, especially due to the fact that they had to adapt to three different coaching styles during the Qualifiers.

"Having three different coaches in a very short period of time wasn't helpful, but that doesn't excuse us. We had a hard time showing our best individual skills, we only did it in a handful of games," the player added.

Before the interview concluded, Mascherano admitted that having to play against Spain will be something the team would love to avoid, especially because La Roja's playing style complicates things for La Albiceleste.
