This will be a very interesting showdown, as unlike some of the other matches, both RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich are not just in the top tier, but are presently ranked no. 3 and no. 2 in the league table. Leipzig, despite only being formed in 2009, were quite impressive in their debut Bundesliga campaign, finishing as runners-up to serial champions Bayern.. However, Leipzig are new to this competition and will be hoping to do better than last season, when they crashed out at the early stages.
Notably for Bayern Munich is the absence of Thomas Muller due to a muscular injury, which rules him out for the next few weeks. It's a huge blow for Jupp Heynckes, who has a strong working relationship with the German star, and Muller joins his international colleague Manuel Neuer on the treatment table, as well as veteran Franck Ribery as players who will not be available for Bayern for this match. Meanwhile, Leipzig have pretty much everyone available and will be seeking their first win over Bayern having lost both meetings with die Roten in Bundesliga action last season, including a game in which they actually led 4-2 until Bayern managed to somehow come back to win 5-4.
