Match facts

  • These two sides have met 16 times before, and the hosts have only tasted victory twice.
  • Germany have beaten their Thursday opponents ten times, including six of their last meetings (D4).
  • Die Mannschaft have never suffered an away defeat in a World Cup qualifier.
  • The defending champions, however, have lost twice at home in World Cup qualifying history.
  • Joachim Low’s men, who are yet to drop a single point in this qualifying round, beat the Green and White Army 2-0 the last time they met.
  • The 2014 World Cup winners have scored 35 goals and conceded only two in the eight qualifiers they have played so far.

Team news

Although Germany is soaring high and are well on their way to another World Cup appearance, die Mannschaft know their spot in Russia is not confirmed yet. However the odds of Northern Ireland piping them to top spot is unlikely, as the Green and White Army have to win their remaining two fixtures and Germany lose their remaining two for that to happen.

Unfortunately, Low has a number of absentees. Mesut Ozil (fitness) and Manuel Neuer (foot) are the biggest two, but his worries don’t stop there.

RB Leipzig ace Timo Werner pulled out of the squad due to a neck injury. He joins Gotze (fitness), Reus (knee), Hector (ankle), Weigl (fitness), and Khedira (fitness) on the sidelines.

The defending World Cup champions are still blessed with enough fire power to blow their opponents away. Kross, Muller, Sane, and Draxler will be tasked with tearing apart Northern Ireland; whilst Boateng, Hummels, and ter Stegen will fight to maintain their impeccable defensive record.
