Currently, Mexico have already sealed their spot. Had the USMNT won their match against Costa Rica, they would be looking good to secure second place, but unfortunately, things did not go as planned for Bruce Arena's side. Los Ticos got revenge on the Stars and Stripes for their Gold Cup semi-finals defeat earlier this summer by winning 2-0 and as such now have a very comfortable six point gap over the USA, who are tied on points with upcoming opponents Honduras.
With just two automatic spots remaining, there are theoretically four teams still in the running: Costa Rica, the USA, Honduras, and even Panama, to some extent. Whoever finishes fourth will have to feature in a inter-continental play-off against a representative from the AFC, and obviously that's something that the Yanks want to avoid.
Fortunately, the USA have a very strong record against Honduras. For starters, they cruised to a very comfortable 6-0 win over them the last time they met, and haven't lost to them in over four years. That being said, Honduras are playing at home, and the USA lost upon their last visit to this ground. Suffice it to say, this is not a game that the Stars and Stripes can afford to lose, as Panama are expected to beat Trinidad and Tobago and will have ten points in the bank. Will the Yanks be able to get back on track after a slip-up last weekend?
