Borussia Dortmund eager for revenge on familiar foes Bayern Munich

We've already had the French Super Cup, featuring bitter rivals Monaco and PSG, and first blood has gone to Les Parisiens, who edged out Les Rouges-et-Blancs 2-1. Now, the focus has shifted to Germany, which will feature Bayern and Dortmund tussling for the German Super Cup, whilst the Supercoppa Italiana takes place next week.

Both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern have now more or less completed most of their respective pre-season campaigns, and neither have impressed. Die Roten ended up losing to both Inter and AC Milan without scoring a goal, and narrowly held on to beat Chelsea 3-2. They also finished dead last in the Audi Cup, but it's important to note that Carlo Ancelotti did field quite a few youngsters in that friendly tournament.

Ancelotti will have to make do without Manuel Neuer, despite his return to light training. New signing James Rodriguez also suffered an injury in pre-season and is set to miss this game plus the next few weeks. Another absentee will be Thiago, as well as Arjen Robben, who has spent quite a bit of time on the injury list over the past few seasons.

Speaking of often-injured players, Marco Reus's bad luck seems to have no end. After a cruciate ligament injury during Dortmund's DFB-Pokal final win over Eintracht Frankfurt this past May, he's set to be out until the end of this year. Meanwhile, Peter Bosz, who took over after Thomas Tuchel's sacking, has struggled to make his mark on the side.

So far, they've managed to hang on to star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but pre-season has not been a successful venture for die Schwarzgelben. A 3-1 win over AC Milan was swiftly followed by a string of disappointing results, including a 2-2 draw with lower tier side Bochum and defeats to Espanyol and Serie A side Atalanta.

Following this game, both teams will then feature in a couple of more pre-season warm-up matches before returning to competitive action later this month. Will Bayern or Dortmund wake up from their summer stupor by clinching the first piece of silverware to kick off their respective 2017/2018 Bundesliga seasons on a good note?
