Winning La Liga and the UEFA Champions League should be enough for the Portuguese strike to win the coveted trophy.

The 2017 Ballon D'Or race is on, and players from around the world are expected to voice their thoughts on who should win the award. What most fans didn't expect was Gerard Pique naming Cristiano Ronaldo as the sure bet to win the trophy, in detriment of his Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi.

According to Piqué, who shared his thoughts in an interview with Qatar channel One, there's a general reason why CR7 should be considered as the frontrunner for the coveted prize.

"Cristiano has to be considered the favorite after winning the league title and the UEFA Champions League. Messi can be considered the best in history, but this year, there are other options to win that prize. We'll have to wait and see,"Pique stated.

The player also admitted that Los Blaugranas weren't able to keep up with all the expectations set on them last season, which saw them winning only one title.

"We wanted to win it all, but sometimes things don't go your way. You can't blame a coach or a player for it. It's a set of circumstances, dealing with training sessions, injuries...we just have to try harder next season. We're looking forward to meet our new team-mates and get to work," Piqué added.
