Can Monaco fight against history and a formidable foe?

Juventus

The hosts come into this game having won the first leg 2-0 and with one foot firmly in the final. Over the weekend, however, Juventus had to labor to earn a 1-1 draw against cross-town rivals Torino. That marked the first time the Bianconeri have dropped points in Serie A at home all season. Next up for them will be a clash with Roma that will decide the Scudetto, but for now, Massimiliano Allegri's men are firmly focused on the task ahead.

A brace from Gonzalo Higuain was enough to earn a win for La Vecchia Signora and snap Monaco's 13 match winning streak on home turf. Ahead of this fixture, Allegri will have everyone availabile. Sami Khedira makes his return from a suspension and will re-claim his spot in the starting XI, whilst Gigi Buffon, Dani Alves, and Giorgio Chiellini, who were rested at the weekend, will be back in the starting line-up for this clash.

Juventus presently are on a 22-match unbeaten home run in European competition, and despite Monaco's electric attack, will be expected to make it a 23rd match sans defeat later today. Still, they will definitely not be taking Les Rouges-et-Blancs lightly as they aim to secure their place in the final (and hopefully end their Champions League hoodoo this season).

Monaco

Like Juventus, Monaco sit on top of their domestic league. However, whilst the Ligue 1 title contenders come into this game having cruised to an easy 3-0 win over Nancy, they will face a much tougher test in Turin this evening. For starters, Juventus have conceded just two goals so far in this season's Champions League. Their 2-0 win in the first leg makes it a sixth straight clean sheet for La Vecchia Signora, and to complicate matters further, history is not on Monaco's side.

So far, Les Rouges-et-Blancs have never won in Italy. They are taking on an opponent who has a 100 per cent win record in two-legged ties against French clubs. And the last team to win at Juve's home ground in European competition? Bayern Munich, back in April 2013. To illustrate how long ago this was, look at this way: Several of Monaco's players - Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar, and Benjamin Mendy - had barely started their professional careers, whilst Mbappe was still playing youth football.

For Leonardo Jardim's side, there are concerns about the fitness of key defender Benjamin Mendy. Should he not be fit to feature, he could be replaced by Nabil Dirar, but regardless of whoever features, one thing is simple: Monaco are not just facing a fight against a formidable foe, but they are also facing a tough battle against history.
