Match Facts & Stats

  • Man City have scored at least 2 goals in 5 of their last 6 away matches
  • The Sky Blues are undefeated in 11 of their last 12 matches
  • Manchester City have won three of their last five meetings with Middlesbrough in all competitions (D1 L1), including in the FA Cup in January (2-0)
  • However, Middlesbrough have lost only one of their 10 Premier League matches at home to Manchester City (W7 D2 L1)
  • That includes a stunning 8-1 crushing of the Citizens back in May 2008

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough are currently six points from safety. They did finally end their winless streak with a win over fellow relegation candidates Sunderland, but that marked their first victory since December, when they beat Swansea City 3-0. Furthermore, the Boro have a very tough run-in between now and the conclusion of the term. Including this match, three out of their remaining four games are against teams in the top four, with Chelsea and Liverpool next on the menu.

Former Manchester City man Alvaro Negredo will be hoping to make an impact against some of his ex-colleagues, and Middlesbrough have managed to win seven out of their last 10 Premier League home gainst against the Sky Blues. Still, they are taking on a side keen on securing Champions League football, and despite being in a bit of a funk, they've won four in their last six on the road.

To put it simply, it's going to take a Herculean effort from the hosts in order to keep their visitors at bay.

Manchester City

The Sky Blues come into this game having failed to get a goal against bitter rivals Manchester United. It was not the most entertaining of Manchester Derbies, as both sides had to settle for a point after a scoreless draw. That result sees Pep Guardiola's side right where they were at the start of the match: in fourth place, meaning that they will have to go through a potentially difficult play-off to earn a spot in the Champions League.

Manchester City have been in a rut as of late, with just two wins out of their last seven league fixtures. They also saw their European campaign come to an end at the hands of a high-flying Monaco, and so for the first time in his career, Guardiola will be ending this season sans silverware. Still, their 3-0 win over Southampton saw the long-awaited return of skipper Vincent Kompany, and fans will be hoping that the Belgian star's injury woes are finally behind them. The draw with the Red Devils has cost them the services of Claudio Bravo, as the Chilean suffered a calf injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Both David Silva and John Stones are in doubt for this game, but that may not prevent Guardiola from rolling the dice and rotating his squad. Regardless of which starting XI he chooses, the Spanish tactician obviously will be seeking all three points in this fixture. With Liverpool slipping up, City could find themselves in third spot by the end of the weekend until the Reds are in action on Monday, but a loss could see them slip into fifth with Arsenal potentially nipping at their heels.
