A reunion on the cards as Ancelotti welcomes former side Real Madrid

Bayern Munich

Bayern come into this game predictably sitting comfortably on top of the Bundesliga. Whilst upstarts RB Leipzig attempted to make the title race a two-party affair for as long as possible, die Roten inevitably began to break away from the chasing pack. With a ten-point advantage, it will take an utter disaster to prevent the Bavarian titans from defending their Bundesliga title.

Carlo Ancelotti's troops rebounded quite well from a shock 1-0 loss to Hoffenheim by thrashing Dortmund 4-1 in last weekend's Klassiker tie. It was exactly the result they needed to build up some positive momentum ahead of their crunch clash with Real Madrid, the first of which will take place later today.

However, there are some major concerns. Key striker Robert Lewandowski after suffering a shoulder injury during the match against ex-side Dortmund, as is star defender Mats Hummels. Meanwhile, there are doubts about Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Douglas Costa, and fans definitely will be hoping that the trio will be OK to feature in tonight's big game.

Real Madrid

It will be a case of the teacher vs. the student as Real Madrid travel to face Bayern. That's because current coach Zinedine Zidane was Ancelotti's assistant as Real clinched their 10th UCL title, and Zidane emulated his former boss in style by leading the Spanish titans to their 11th title last year. No team has ever managed to defend their title since the tournament was re-formatted in 1992, with fallen Italian giants AC Milan the last team to manage to win back-to-back prizes in 1989 and 1990.

The visitors also took part in a big league clash at the weekend, but were unable to get the better of cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid as both sides cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw. That game also cost them a key player, with defender Pepe being ruled out of this tie. Although they cruised to a 4-0 win the last time the two sides met, this time may not be as smooth sailing for the all-time Champions League winners, as Bayern have won their last 16 European ties at the Allianz Arena.
