  • Barca’s opponents, however, have only conceded in two of their last nine league matches.

  • Quique Sánchez Flores’ boys sit in 9th spot and are only nine points behind their Cataln giants.

Team news

With Real Madrid away in Japan on FIFA Club World Cup duty, Barca have the golden chance of closing the gap between them and the table-toppers to three points. Unfortunately, that game will see them clash with regional rivals Espanyol in the always-heated Cataln derby.

History is not on the away team’s side, as they have not beaten the reigning Spanish Primera Division champions since 2009. Furthermore, Blanquiazules have kept seven cleans sheets in their last nine games.

However, the hosts will be boosted by the return of key attacker Neymar. The Brazilian missed Barca’s last league game – a walk-in-the-park 3-0 win over Osasuna – due to suspension, but will return to the starting eleven on Sunday.

The Selecao ace was present in the 5-3 friendly win over Al Ahli. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez also found the back of the net that day, with the latter signing a contract extension soon afterwards. The new deal will see the Uruguayan superstar remain at Camp Nou until 2021.

Espanyol, yet to concede in the last four away league games, have a few doubts. Leo Baptistao, Hernan Perez, and Victor Alvarez are all unlikely to feature.
