World Cup Qualifying, CBC

CBC Sports Weekend takes to the pitch at home and abroad for a full Saturday of soccer, with live coverage of a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying match, a 2009 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup match and live MLS on CBC action. Gemini Award-winner Scott Russell will host CBC’s coverage, kicking off at 11 a.m. ET, with a critical World Cup qualifier between Russia and Germany, live from Moscow.

At 2 p.m. ET, the focus will shift to the 2009 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup quarterfinal between Germany and Brazil from Egypt. Capping off the triple-header will be a crucial MLS on CBC showdown between the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC, at 4 p.m. ET, live from BMO Field in Toronto. Toronto sits three points behind the New England Revolution in the race for the eighth and final MLS playoff spot, with only three regular season games remaining. All of Saturday’s matches will be live on CBC Television and CBCSports.ca.

Joining Russell, live from the CBC Sports Weekend set in Toronto, will be the voice of MLS on CBC, Nigel Reed, along with Jason DeVos, Mitch Peacock and CBCSports.ca’s John Molinaro to provide insight and analysis. The program will also feature highlights of other key qualifying matches as the race heats up to become one of the final 32 teams challenging for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa on CBC next summer. Brenda Irving will host the MLS on CBC match from BMO Field, with Reed calling play-by-play alongside DeVos.
