Match facts and other historical stats - Roma vs. Porto

  • Roma coach Luciano Spalletti still has never lost to Porto (including from his time at Zenit)
  • The Giallorossi have a record of five wins, six draws, and three losses against Portuguese sides
  • At the Stadio Olimpico, that record is three wins, two draws, and only one loss
  • Porto's record against Italian sides: seven wins, nine draws, and 11 losses...
  • ... and on Italian soil: three wins, three draws, and six losses

Team news

Despite having to play for over an hour with ten men following Thomas Vermaelen's dismissal, Roma managed to hang on for a one-all draw against Porto. The Giallorossi will be boosted by their 4-0 rout of Udinese in domestic action last weekend, during which they scored all four goals in 19 minutes during the second half. Fans, however, will be hoping to see Diego Perotti, Mohamed Salah, and Edin Dzeko manage to do the same in tonight's fixture as they look to join fellow Serie A sides Juventus and Napoli in the group stages.

Three players for the home side - Alessandro Florenzi, Leandro Paredes, and Vasilis Torosidis - will all miss out due to injury. A 0-0 draw would suffice for Roma to get through, but naturally, Porto will come out strong knowing that they must score to remain in this competition, which could make this match a very entertaining one for fans and neutrals alike.

Match facts and other historical stats - Manchester City vs. Steaua Bucureşti

  • Manchester City's 5-0 rout of Steaua Bucureşti was the biggest ever win for the English giants in European matches
  • It also is the worst loss suffered by the Romanian outfit in European games
  • So far, City have never lost to a Romanian side; their only prior encounter ended as a 3-0 win on aggregate back in the 2010/2011 Europa League play-offs
  • Steaua Bucureşti have never won a game against English opposition in England (two draws, seven losses)

Team news

Simply put, this match is nothing but a mere formality. During the first leg, Pep Guardiola’s men were comfortably in control from start to finish as they strolled to a 5-0 win in Romania. In fact, the score-line could have been even more lopsided perhaps had Sergio Aguero not missed one, but two spot-kicks. However, the Argentinian superstar redeemed himself in style by grabbing a hat-trick during City’s rout of Steaua Bucureşti.

Last season saw the Sky Blues make an impressive run all the way to the semi-finals, before unfortunately losing 1-0 to eventual winners Real Madrid. Now with Guardiola on the bench, the team’s wealthy and ambitious owners will be looking to achieve the same – and perhaps more – in Manchester City’s sixth straight European adventure.

As for Steaua Bucureşti, they will be playing for nothing but pride, and will hope to at least score a consolation goal against what will be likely a weakened City side before bowing out of this competition.
