Belgium have parted ways with coach Marc Wilmots following a disappointing outing at Euro 2016.

The Belgian Football Association has sacked national team coach Marc Wilmots after their Euro 2016 performance. Coach Wilmots had a contract with the Red Devils until the 2018 World Cup but the country’s football governing body has decided to terminate it prematurely citing failure to reach the set objectives at the European Championship in France.

Speaking to the press, FA president Francois De Keersmaecker explained that the former world giants needed a ‘new impulse to the team.’ Further reports from Belgium suggest that the 47-year-old (below) could be given one million Euros as a send-off, but the FA president refused to confirm the reports.Marc Wilmots

The Red Devils, who were once at the top of the FIFA Rankings thanks to the stewardship of the former footballer-cum-manager, were bundled out of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and Euro in France in 2016 at the quarter-final stage. At the Euro in France, Marc Wilmots’ men lost to dark horses Wales in the quarter-finals, a result that sparked nationwide outrage.
