With Euro 2016 set to start next month, all the 24 participating sides will be taking part in a series of friendlies in order to help their respective managers pick his best starting XIs for the big event. As one of the teams heading to France in June, Croatia, who failed to clear the group stage back in 2012, will be hoping to improve this time around, and the Vatreni will be kicking off their preparations with a warm-up clash against Moldova on Friday.
Head coach Ante Čačić will be without a host of key players for the match due to club commitments. Both Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić will play no part given that Real Madrid are featuring in Saturday's Champions League final, whilst others like Ivan Rakitić and Mario Mandžukić only just concluded their seasons with Barcelona and Juventus respectively. As such, this will give some of the less-used players a chance to try to force their way into the coach's starting XI plans ahead of the upcoming tournament in a few weeks' time.
Croatia's upcoming opponents Moldova are currently ranked 156th in the world. This will be only the second meeting between the two sides, and Moldova have, to date, never managed to qualify for a World Cup or European championship since becoming independent of the Soviet Union.
