Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan will not be able to play for his country in the European tournament. An untimely injury forced him to miss the 2014 World Cup as well.

Bad news for Joachim Löw arrived from Borussia Dortmund's camp, as holding midfielder Ilkay Gundögan will miss the Euro 2016 tournament due to a serious knee injury.

The talented footballer, who also missed the 2014 World Cup due to health issues, came down with this fresh injury during Dortmund's training sessions on Tuesday. The club refused to inform about the player's situation until proper tests were carried out, and team officers revealed the news to the World Champions coaching staff earlier today.

Gundögan's dislocated knee could even stall his transfer to Manchester City, as he has been deemed as one of Pep Guardiola's primary transfer targets. Sources indicated a deal had been reached between the Citizens and the Bundesliga side, but the deal could be put on hold if this injury keeps the player on the sidelines for a long time.

Gundögan has played 40 games in all comps for Borussia Dortmund this season.

Gundögan's injury update hands a serious blow to Borussia Dortmund's chances of winning the Bundesliga, as Thomas Tuchel's crew needs to win their match this Saturday and hope Bayern Munich loses in order to have hopes of silverware for the final game of the season.
