Having bounced back from a 2-1 loss against Porto earlier this month by picking up all three points last weekend, Benfica will be hoping to make it a second consecutive win as they hope to regain ground on league leaders Sporting CP.
Meanwhile, their upcoming opponents, União Madeira are in dire straits, having failed to win four out of their past five league games. And although they are five points away from the relegation zone, a couple more negative results could see them uncomfortably close towards making a return to the second tier a season after earning their first promotion to the Primeira Liga in 20 years.
Rui Vitoria's side defeated their upcoming visitors both home and away during the 1994/1995 Primeira Liga season, but were held to a surprise scoreless draw in the reverse fixture earlier this season. The Eagles have won four out of their past five matches across all competitions and have a slight advantage over Russian powerhouse Zenit after defeating them 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 courtesy of a late goal from their top goalscorer Jonas.
In terms of their home record this season, Benfica have only lost twice at their own stadium, and both of those defeats were to fellow "Big Three" members Sporting CP and Porto. Given that both their title rivals will be in action later, Vitoria's team will want to make sure they avoid dropping any points in order to stay ahead of Porto and within touching distance of the current league leaders.
Due to lightning and inclement weather, this fixture, which was supposed to be played on Sunday, February 28th, will now take place on Monday, February 29th. Will the disruption in schedule put Benfica off their game, or will they be able to pick up another win ahead of a crunch clash against Sporting CP this upcoming Saturday?
