With a very tough Champions League fixture coming up next week, Roma will need all the confidence they can get as the odds are highly stacked against them. Under the tutelage of Luciano Spalletti, the Giallorossi have enjoyed an uptick in form and would certainly like to keep climbing the table as they take on Serie A debutants Carpi later today.
Carpi
The first meeting for Carpi and Roma was an unpleasant one for the Biancorossi, as they were thrashed 5-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Since then, Fabrizio Castori's men have predictably struggled in their first season in Italian football's top flight. They have won just four matches - the last of which was a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria on January 17th. That also happened to be the only occasion that Carpi were able to string together back-to-back wins, but with the exception of round 7, the hosts have never been out of the relegation zone.
With five points separating them from safety, things are not looking good for the Serie A newboys. They will be coming into this game having lost their last two games and last enjoyed a home win when they beat Udinese and then the aforementioned Sampdoria last month.
Roma
Thanks to having won their past three games, the Lupi are now within touching distance of a Champions League spot. Key to their renaissance has been the excellent performances of two of their new signings - Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti - who joined on loan from Monaco and Genoa respectively. El Shaarawy in particular has been in good form since returning to Italy, with two goals and one assist and Giallorossi fans will hope that il Faraone will be able to continue in this same vein of form.
The visitors will be missing Radja Nainggolan due to suspension, but given the Belgian's influence in the middle of the park, it may be to their advantage to keep him rested for their big Champions League match next week. In addition, Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, Vasilis Torosidis, and Kevin Strootman all trained apart as they recover from their respective injuries. Spalletti will likely go with the speedy duo of Mohamed Salah and El Shaarawy up front, as both put in a good shift and scored in the team's 2-0 win over Sassuolo.
Carpi will be hoping that their visitors will be too focused on their upcoming European match and try to steal a point, but with the newly found confidence the team have discovered under Spalletti, it is hard to see the Biancorossi getting anything out of this fixture.
