His long range wonder volley was enough to see the Bavarians progress to the quarter-finals on a 1-0 win.

Scoring long-range wonder goals is nothing new to Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, but the Bayern Munich man look to have outdone all previous attempts with his beauty of a strike on Tuesday.

The former Liverpool ace, whose famous volley against Newcastle rates as one of the best goals in the English Premier League, found the back of the net against Darmstadt 98 in the German Cup.

With the game tied at nil-nil, the 34 year struck a 35-yard thunderous volley which flew into the opposing team’s goal, a strike which proved to be the winner in their 1-0 triumph.

Alonso’s goal came on a night were the Bavarians, despite dominating possession and play as usual, were unable to break down Darmstadt, needing the 2010 World Cup winner’s 40th minute magic to secure progression into the quarter-finals.

Oddly, it was a day where Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller were wasteful in front of goal, missing several opportunities to write their names on the score sheet.

Maybe the German and Polish ace were just tired from the 19 goals Pep Guardiola’s crew scored en route to the Champions League last 16, where they will face Serie A holders Juventus.

A few months earlier, and he could have been in contention for the 2015 Puskas award.
