Cristiano also tipped the former Real Madrid boss as one of the top managers out there.

Chelsea are in a downward spiral in the English Premier League, with their Portuguese boss losing the support of his team and in danger of being axed, yet Cristiano Ronaldo tips Jose Mourinho to turn the Blues’ fortunes around.

11 games have ended in 6 defeats for the reigning champions, resulting in their slump to 15th spot, the worst title defense in the league’s history.

Nonetheless, Cristiano, who spent three seasons under the Special One’s tutelage at Los Blancos, claimed he is not surprised by the alarming turn of events at Stamford Bridge, but insists that the 52-year-old has the potential to make the discontented Chelsea fans happy again.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the 30-year-old three-time Ballon d’Or winner said:

"I'm not surprised because in football anything can happen. I'm not surprised.

"Of course he is a manager that I was working with for two years and I know his potential.

"I know him and Chelsea are going to pass this tough situation.

"As a Portuguese man of course I want to see the Portuguese people at the top level all the time, so this is what I wish for him - that he can go through this bad situation and make Chelsea fans happy, because I think they deserve it."

Whilst speaking to BT Sport, Ronaldo also hailed Mourinho as one of the best managers out there, despite coming close to a physical confrontation during their time together.

“I would put him at the top, I always say that," added the Portugal captain.

"He’s a good coach, he did many good things and won many trophies for other clubs.
