Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic could sit out of the much-anticipated EL Clasico after picking up a calf strain during the 3-0 victory over BATE on Wednesday.

The Barcelona ace limped off the field on the 20th minute and was replaced by Munir El Haddadi. However, manager Luis Enrique remains hopeful that the influential player will recover before the derby kicks off in two week’s time.

FC Barcelona, through their official website, confirmed that the Croatian will not fixture in this weekend’s fixture against Villarreal.

Speaking about the injury, Enrique explained, ''We will see how he is. He is out of the next game for sure then it will be up to the doctors. As always the aim is not that he comes back for one particular match but that he comes back right.''

The 27-year-old player has been instrumental for the Blaugrana, having scored two crucial goals away to BATE in the first leg of the fixture to hand Barcelona an important win in Group E. He also scored the opening goal for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final against Juventus on June, 6, 2015.

Rakitic celebrates his opening goal for Barcelona against Juventus with his teammates in this year's Champions League final. Barcelona won the match 3-1.

Rakitic celebrations his Champions League goal

This season, the Croatian has played 226 minutes for Barcelona in the Champions League, scored two goals and provided one assist. In the La Liga, he has played 777 minutes in nine games for  the Spanish giants. He now joins the list of injured players at Barca, which include star player Messi and Rafinha, who will most likely miss the El Classico.
