Mourinho will be without the Belgian custodian for a lengthy spell after picking up an injury ahead of their trip to Everton.

With Chelsea in poor form, news of Thibaut Courtois’ injury could not have come at a worse time.

The Blues, having lost two and drawn one of their first four encounters in the new English Premier League season, look to be without their Belgian custodian for at least two months after picking up a serious knee injury.

Swelling has prevented the Chelsea doctors from making a full diagnosis on the extent of his injury, as reported by the Daily Mail, but the goalkeeper has been warned to expect a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Cruciate-ligament damage has been ruled out, however.

Claims by Spanish publication MARCA are that Courtois could miss up to four months of action. See how Twitter reacted below.

The 23-year-old, despite playing an integral role in the London side’s title-winning season last campaign, has endured a torrid start to the season.

In his first game of the season, the former Atletico Madrid man conceded and was sent off in the club’s 2-2 draw Swansea, before letting in two goals each in their last two matches; a win away to West Brom and a 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace.

Nonetheless, Courtois’ loss will prove a great setback to Chelsea’s title hopes, especially given that Jose Mourinho’s men have only registered one win.

Summer signing Asmir Begovic will replace the Belgian shot-stopper, with the Bosnian ace most likely to begin life as first-choice keeper at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s clash with Everton.
