The Spanish defender was expelled from the match only ten minutes into the second half. Pique used his Twitter account to send an apology for his actions

Gerard Piqué was one of the best men for Barcelona in the second leg of the Super Cup until his emotions got the worst of him and the referee decided to send him off for insulting one of his colleagues. Ten minutes into the second half, Pique left the pitch and his team with only ten men, while they were already winning 1-0.

Now, after the authorities revised the content of the report from Carlos Velasco, the referee of the match, the committee decided to hand a four-game ban to Piqué for insulting the assistant referee. Some claim that Pique used some highly offensive language while trying to vent his frustration straight into the face of the assistant.

While Pique claimed that was not true, he did use his Twitter account to issue an apology for what happened in a game where Barcelona was hoping to come back from a 0-4 deficit after the first leg. The Spanish defender will now have to serve a four-game ban from action in La Liga based on the decision made by the Spanish Football Federation. Early on, there seemed to be a chance for him to miss up to twelve games for his actions.

"Pique felt sorry for acting the way he did but doesn't claim to have offended anyone"

Aside from not being able to play, the Barcelona defender has to pay a fine of  3.005 euros, while the club must pay 1.400 euros. Both, the club and the player have claimed they will try to reduce of eliminate the sanction as they do not see it as fair.

It should not be a problem for Piqué to pay the fine

Athletic, Málaga, Atlético de Madrid y Levante would be the teams that the Catalan side would have to play without Pique if within the next ten days an appeal is not processed or approved. Barcelona will begin the season hoping to claim a sixth title in the last eight years.
