Netherlands new captain Mark van BommelNow, though, Mark van Bommel will take charge of leading the Oranje at the delight of Coach Bert van Marwijk who chose him to become the Netherlands’ new skipper. Marwijk briefly revealed how things happened when Van Bommel received the news, saying:

“He seemed a bit shocked about it at first. But soon after, he said that it was a real honor for him [to become captain of the Netherlands national football team].

The manager then offered some warm words to the 33-year-old Dutch star while he continued speaking to the media. Bert van Marwijk declared:

“Mark van Bommel is a good organizer on the pitch. His position is also excellent for the role of captain. We discussed things with the technical staff for minutes before we decided anything.

“Mark is the right age and position to captain the Netherlands. He has the experience since he did the job in the past at PSV and now at Bayern Munich.”

Mark van Bommel has had 63 appearances for the Netherlands so far since making his debut for the Dutch back in October 2000 against Cyprus. On Friday, however, the new Oranje captain will have to lead his side as they play away to San Marino on match-day one of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
