The German goalkeeper was a candidate in the most recent edition of the Ballon d'Or. It was his first big mistake since November 2013.

Manuel Neuer is without a doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now. But last night in the game between Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach, he showed us he also makes mistakes.

His brilliant saves with Germany and Bayern Munich made him a candidate to win the Ballon d’Or this past January. Some even gave him an edge to win it over Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Neuer is known for having barely anything to do throughout the game, but when he is challenged, he can deliver.

Caetano de Araujo, better known as Raffael, took advantage of a night where Neuer was not the same goalkeeper we use to admire. The 27-year-old keeper had been a spectator for the first 30 minutes of the game at the Allianz Arena.

Just half an hour after the game started, Caetano received a cross from the right side and with a powerful strike sent the ball towards Neuer. The goalkeeper mishandled it and the ball went past the goal line in a dramatic fashion.

Pep Guardiola was as surprised as anyone else who was watching. Even Neuer’s facial expression could not give credit to what just happened. It was his first big mistake since November 2013.

“We didn't lose due to Manu but because we had problems in attack," Pep said.

In the second half, things continued to get ugly for Bayern. Raffael took another shot at the goalkeeper and it was deflected, but it still went in. The instant replay just showed how the ball hit Neuer in his hand but then turned the other way and into the net.

Despite Bayern’s 2-0 loss, they are still on top of the Bundesliga standings with 64 points after 26 games. They are followed by Wolfsburg who is ten points behind and the Monchengladbach follows in third with 47 points.
