After being the subject of several rumors, it appears Marco Reus will keep playing for Borussia Dortmund. According to German newspapers, the 25-year old wingman is set to sign a new contract with the black-and-yellow side, putting an end to speculation about the player's future.
Reus' current contract expires in June 2017, with a buyout clause of 25 million euros that the player could execute this summer. According to Dortmund's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, the club has already offered Reus' agent a contract extension to prevent a possible departure by one of their key players in recent years. This new deal would make Reus the highest-paid player in Borussia Dortmund's payroll.
"I don't want to make any water level reports, but what I can say is that we have put all our cards on the table, the ball is now in Marco's field. He knows we have our limits," Watzke told the press.
The club's intentions by extending Reus' contract would be aiming to ease the tension surrounding Jurgen Klopp's side, which will be trying to avoid relegation after a complicated start in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund remains in relegation spots, but the team showed some improvement in last Saturday's victory against Freiburg.
Reus has been heavily linked to a transfer for quite some time now, with such European giants as Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid. Another team who sought Reus' services was Bayern Munich, but Dortmund's officers denied the Bavarians an opportunity to sign the player after they revealed the wingman's buyout clause in an interview.
