Police reports read that fans were trying to access venue without tickets. Fans believe authorities abused their power.

Egyptian soccer is making headlines this weekend but for a very sad reason, the death of over 20 fans in Cairo.

Even before the game between Zamalek and ENPPI started at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo, fans from both teams clashed outside the venue. Not too much has been said about the game that ended 1-1.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior reported that some fans were trying to force their way into the stadium. Police reports say that some of those fans did not have tickets. Latest reports say 25 people have died.

After being denied to enter, supporters set fire to a police vehicle. The police responded by arresting those involved and using tear gas and bird shots to disperse fans. Fighting back and forth caused the death of those 25 fans who were trapped in a tightly packed crowd.

The Egyptian authorities tried to contain such actions from happening. Their idea was to only let 10,000 people in a venue that fits 30,000 spectators.

The White Knights (Zamalek fans nickname) used their Facebook official page to blame authorities n the incident. They said authorities only opened one narrow, barbed-wire door to let them in. That did not sit well with fans and caused the following violent acts.

An anonymous fan told the Associated Press that after police launched their attack, people started to faint or show signs of suffocation. Police stated they were simply trying to prevent the Ultras from damaging public property.

Last time something similar happened was on February 1st 2012, when 74 people died and 254 were injured in clashes inside the Port Said Stadium. That time supporters Al-Masry and Al-Ahly fans were the ones involved.
