DR Congo and Equatorial Guinea, who were defeated by Ivory Coast and Ghana in their respective semi finals during the 31st Jan – 1st Feb AFCON weekend will take to the pitch at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo to determine the third place winner.
Both teams have performed surprisingly well so far in the tournament, having proceeded to the semis at the expense of higher rated teams like Tunisia, Algeria, and Gabon. Having made a relatively modest number of appearances in the competition (two for the hosts and 15 for DR Congo), both teams will have one thing and one thing only on their minds on Saturday: to attack their peers and clinch the third best spot.
Surprise packages Equatorial Guinea have shocked Africa and the world this term, managing to squeeze into the semi finals of Africa’s premier international football tournament in only their second appearance.
Aubameyang’s Gabon and second-best-in-Africa Tunisia are among the notable victims of the 2015 hosts’ sensational emergence, with both having had to pack their bags and go home after suffering humiliating defeats at the hands National Thunder.
DR Congo have also claimed major scalps in the competition, starting with their 4-3 victory over AFCON 2015 finalists Ivory Coast on the Elephants’ home turf in Abidjan. Their 4-2 thrashing of neighbors Congo (Brazzaville) is what launched them into the semis where they unfortunately suffered a 3-1 revenge beating by the imperious Ivorians.
One can only hope that there will be no repeat of the chaotic scenes witnessed during Ghana and Equatorial Guinea’s semis match at the Malabo New Stadium where enraged Leopards’ fans wreaked all sorts of havoc after their boys were soundly beaten by Ghana. Hopefully, it will be footballing events on the pitch that will take center stage on Saturday.
