With the Champions League already underway, Europe’s second tier competition will begin from this Thursday. Sevilla won the competition last time out and the defending champions have been paired in a relatively easy group which comprises of Feyenoord, HNK Rijeka and Standard Liege.
Villarreal the other Spanish team in the competition has been handed a tougher draw. In their first match of the campaign Marcelino García Toral’s men will lock horns with German side Borussia M'gladbach. The Yellow Submarines have failed to impress in La Liga so far and have managed just four points out of the three matches they have played.
English side Tottenham on the other hand have made a fairly positive start to the season. Spurs have been impressive so far in the Premier League but were at the receiving end of a 3-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool. Tottenham have shown promise in the Europa League in the past and will be hoping they can go far in the competition this time around. The North London side will face Serbian side Partizan in their opening match.
Everton the other English side to have made it to the Europa League has had a disappointing start to the season after managing just a single victory from the four matches they have played so far in the league. After goal frenzy against Chelsea which finished 6-3 at the Goodison Park, the Toffees restored order in their last outing picking a 2-0 win over West Brom.
They will now be hoping to produce better performances in the Europa League where they have been paired in a relatively difficult group. Roberto Martinez’s side is in Group H alongside VfL Wolfsburg, Lille and FK Krasnodar and in their opening fixture the Merseyside outfit will face Wolfsburg.
Napoli who were unexpectedly knocked out of the Champions League by Athletic Bilbao in the play-off round will now have their chance to make amends in Europe’s second tier competition. The Partenopei have made a mixed start to the new season and after their 2-1 victory over Genoa in their opening Serie A fixture, Rafael Benítez’s men suffered a 1-0 loss in their subsequent outing against Chievo. Napoli will now be looking to keep the defeat at the back of their mind when they face Sparta Praha on Thursday night.
Italian sides Inter Milan and Fiorentina will also be in action on Thursday night. Fiorentina who are currently winless in Serie A after two matches will face Guingamp. Inter Milan on the other hand will lock horns with Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. Italian side Torino who enjoyed a successful campaign last time out will face Belgian side Club Brugge.
