Who are the 2014-15 Primeira Liga promoted teams?

It has been quite some time since Boavista last took part in a top flight match in Portugal. The Panthers were once considered to be one of the top four teams in the country, and are also one of the oldest clubs in Portugal. But after a match fixing scandal, they were relegated to the second division in 2008.

After numerous court cases, João Loureiro’s side is back in the Portuguese top flight for the 2014-15 campaign.

Joining them will be Moreirense, who claimed the top spot in the second division last season. Also back in the Primeira Liga is Penafiel, making their 14th appearance.

Fortunately for some of the less impressive sides last season, only one club was relegated due to the fact that two were promoted from the second division, and Boavista was reinstated into the league. Olhanense were the unfortunate ones, finishing with just 24 points after 30 matches.

Here are the changes for the 2014-15 Primeira Liga campaign:

- Promoted: Boavista, Moreirense, Penafiel
- Relegated: Olhanense

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League?

Lisbon side Benfica won the Portuguese League, earning them a direct spot in the Champions League Group Stage. Their same city rivals Sporting finished second, after a very poor 2012-13 campaign thanks to new AS Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim.

They too, have earned themselves a direct spot in the Champions League.

Porto on the other hand were not as fortunate, as the Dragons finished third, forcing them into a qualification round. In order to earn a spot in the Group Stage, they will need to get the best of French side Lille over two-legs, which will take place August 20th and August 26th.

1. Benfica - 74 points

2. Sporting - 67 points

3. Porto - 61 points

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League?

The Europa League may not generate as much revenue, but for some smaller clubs, it is a chance to make themselves known. That is exactly what Nacional, Estoril and Rio Ave will be looking to do.

Led by now Sporting manager Marco Silva, Estoril finished an impressive fourth last season, and they have earned themselves a direct spot into the competition. As for the other two, they will both have to take part in a two-leg playoff.

Nacional will be up against Dynamo Minsk from Belarus. Rio Ave will be making their debut in European competitions, having already eliminated IFK Goteborg in the previous round. They will now go to battle against another Swedish side, this time Elfsborg.

Who were last season’s domestic cup winners?

Last season could have gone a little better for Jorge Jesus and his Benfica side in the Europa League Final, but from a domestic standpoint, it was perfect. The Lisbon giants not only claimed the Primeira Liga, but they also won the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga. Surprisingly, both cup competitions were won against Rio Ave.

Taça de Portugal champions: Benfica - Lisbon, Portugal

Taça da Liga champions: Benfica - Lisbon, Portugal

Primeira Liga champions: Benfica - Lisbon, Portugal

What are the biggest managerial changes?

Of the 18 clubs in the Primeira Liga, 10 of them have a new man in charge. Two more notable changes will be those of Sporting and Porto.

After finishing second and really getting the most out of his players, Leonardo Jardim parted ways from Sporting. The former Braga and Olympiakos manager agreed to terminate his contract with the Lions, allowing him to sign with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

Porto will also have a new manager on their bench this season. They dismissed Paulo Fonseca mid-season, promoting B team manager Luis Castro as interim manager. But with the new season set to kick-off, former Spain U-21 manager Julen Lopetegui will be tasked with getting his side back to the top of the table.

A few other notable changes would be Sergio Conceição leaving Academica to join SC Braga. Also, Nuno Espirito Santo has left Rio Ave, making way for former Maritimo manager Pedro Martins.
