Alfredo di Stefano, who played for giant Spanish club Real Madrid during a period of 11 years (1953-1964) has died at the old age of 88. He was nicknamed the “Blond Arrow”.

During his lifetime, the Argentine-born legend was recognized with two Ballon d’Ors – in 1957 and 1959 before becoming the only football personality to receive the Super Ballon d’Or by France Football in 1989.

With 308 goals in 396 appearances for Los Blancos, he currently ranks as the club’s second highest goalscorer. In 2000, Di Stefano was named honorary president by Florentino Perez.

On Saturday, the Real Madrid icon suffered an 18-minute cardiac arrest and fell into coma. He was then said to be in a critical but stable condition but eventually succumbed to death on Monday. A statement on Real Madrid’s official website read:

“Real Madrid C. F. regrets to announce that its Honorary President, Alfredo Di Stéfano, passed away today at 17:15 in the General Universitario Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid.

“The President of Real Madrid C. F., Florentino Pérez, and the club’s Board of Directors would like to express their deepest sympathy and affection to his children, family and friends.”

A day before his cardiac arrest, the Galacticos celebrated their ambassador's birthday with this video:
